Star Worlds Arcade has added yet another cool new pinball machine. Gottlieb's Caveman is the world's first video/pinball hybrid game ever made. Yes, it came out before Bally/Midway's Baby Pac-Man by a few months. Caveman is a full size wide body pinball machine that features an actual video screen that is mounted in the game's playfield. A joystick is mounted on the front lockdown bar for playing the game when you go into the video mode.
Back in the early 1980's, people were mostly playing video games leaving the pinball machine aside. Gottlieb attempted to introduce gamers back into the pinball world. Though the game was not considered a huge success, we were lucky enough to find one in great shape. Here at Star Worlds, the game has been a HUGE success as players seem to really enjoy playing this game over and over. It is currently the most competitive high score to be beaten on our hall of fame board.
I remember seeing this game for the first time at Mona's Arcade in Ledgewood, NJ one summer when I was visiting my grandparents. No, I did not play it, there were way to many other new games just out that I donated my limited quarter supply to . For years I had thought about this game and wondered if we would ever find one in playable condition.
Caveman has the neat blue Gottlieb digital scoring, but on this game it is on a backbox that over hangs the playfield. Once the ball is put into play it is pretty much like any pinball machine. If you hit the ball into the caves, it locks in, shuts off all the playfield lighting, and you are now in video mode. "Caveman, wake up" and then you are off wandering the maze avoiding the red dinosaurs and ramming into the green ones. This game also has one of the cool early speech modules and you can hear several sayings such as "Caveman, wake up", "Don't eat me," and "Get extra ball".
Next time you are visiting Star Worlds Arcade, be sure and give Caveman a try.
Clubbing Inky over the head,
Pac-Man Pat |
