"You're off to see the Wizard, the magical Wizard of Wor."
Wizard of Wor was one of the first games I owned back in the 80's. Other than being the first color game I owned, it also had robotic speech. As time went on, it got, for whatever reason, converted into a Tetris game. I've been looking for one for a few years now that was still in nice shape. We hit the jackpot a few weeks back and now you can come in and play this very cool classic arcade game, too!
For one, we found this game in the very hard to find mini/cabaret cabinet. It's in fantastic shape as it was in a guy's personal collection since day one. He had gotten it from his grandmother who, back in the 80's, worked for Bally Midway in Northlake, IL. He took really good care of it and now it sure has a great second home here at Star Worlds Arcade.
We have our machine set up to give you 3 "Worriors" for 1 token, and 7 Worriors for 2 tokens. The game is played with a 4-way joystick and 1 fire button. You can play as a team or one on one with the machine. If you are playing as a team, keep in mind that your teammate can shoot and kill you...1000 points for each of your Worrior's. (lol)
You play in a line drawn maze as Burwor, Garwor and Thorwor chase and try to attack you. Below the maze is a radar screen so you can keep track of where they are. Occasionally, the Worlucks and the Wizard of Wor appear briefly. Shoot them for double score dungeons and big points. All the time you are playing you can hear the voice of the Wizard or Wor heckling you and laughing. This was one of the first games that came out into the arcades that offered speech, soon followed by the ever so popular Gorf by Bally Midway. Personally, this is one of my favorite early games that used robotic speech. 1981 was sure a banner year for many great arcade games such as Bosconian, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Gorf, Galaga, Kick Man, Lady Bug, Make Trax, Mouse Trap, Omega Race, Qix, Robby Roto, Scramble, Stargate, Turbo, and the ever popular Ms. Pac-Man. Wizard of Wor belongs in the list for sure.
So the next time you find yourself hanging out at your local Star Worlds Arcade, feel free to try and give the Wizard of Wor a run for your money!
